ASUS VS239N Monitor: Complete Review & Specs

Symmetrical rows of budget monitors IPS-matrix supplemented with new models. Among them was ASUS VS239N – modification of presented previously VS239H, from which it is different set of connectors.

Design

ASUS VS239N

ASUS VS239N externally looks like and expect from a budget IPS-model: extremely simple design, low-key design, defined largely required functionality of the device, rather than a desire to give the monitor a unique look.

Housing in this model is made of black plastic frame around the screen is glossy, it is located on the company logo, icon and symbols IPS front control buttons. Model name, as in some other monitors we’ve seen, there is not.

Case thickness slightly more than other monitors with LED-backlit, but only slightly (most likely this is due to the placement of the power supply inside the monitor). Rear of the mat, with fine textured “mesh” pattern. It is possible to mount on the wall (VESA 100 × 100), and the holes for screws are covered with neat rubber plugs – the other monitors in this price range that decision we had ever seen. True, all the connectors are arranged in such a way that the cable connected to the monitor will not interfere in the case of mounting the display to the wall, it should be considered when preparing for installation.

Leg hard enough, the monitor attached initially and shoot it is not assumed. Stand a small pedicle attached to the metal screw. The connection goes quite tough, relatively little screen wobbles – but because of the low weight and the small area of the monitor stand stability as a whole is not up to par. Stand as glossy surface, with an interesting “rough” dot pattern.

Functionality legs already familiar minimal – only allowed to change the screen angle, or rotate around its axis, no height adjustment, no transition in portrait mode here in ASUS VS239N.

ASUS VS239N
Video Inputs from ASUS VS239N only two – VGA and DVI. Previously presented model VS239H, which is additionally equipped with HDMI (as well as the audio output to the headphones, which have VS239N absent for obvious reasons).
Menu

The control buttons are on the bottom of the ASUS VS239N monitor, their symbols printed on the front. The menu is divided into two areas – the left-hand list of topics on the right – these sections are included in items. The main section of the menu is a proprietary technology Splendid – here contains various display modes (quick switching between them, without the menu, by using the S). In the second section, the color is allowed to adjust the brightness, contrast, select one of the color temperature, etc. (Some items may not be available depending on the selected mode in the menu Splendid). The Picture menu is used to configure the image with analog connection – using the DVI-input all the items in it are not available. Selecting Entry expectedly offers the ability to switch between video inputs. One last point the system configuration that contains options for setting the OSD Language selection, reset to factory settings, and some other options.

An interesting feature is the mode QuickFit, called the button, which is indicated by an icon “screen with a line” – by clicking on it, display a grid showing the outlines of documents and photos of various sizes, which can be useful to designers or amateurs.

In

In the model ASUS VS239N used e-IPS matrix 23 “16:9 aspect ratio (presumably LG LM230WF3-SLB1). The manufacturer claims a large enough response time – 14 ms (GtG), with scrolling text or dragging windows become visible light grease.

Splendid Technology offers 6 different preset pictures. SRGB mode, we see a near perfect schedule of range – the entire range it is at or slightly below the value of 2.2. Color temperature is an exaggeration (~ 7300K), and in this mode cannot be adjusted. Noticeably muted brightness (~ 110 cd / m ²), and, again, cannot be changed. Standard is designed to work with the text, in this mode the default brightness set to maximum, but it can be modified to suit your preferences. Schedule of reduced scale are especially in the highlights, which reduces contrast. The color temperature is only slightly colder than the standard 6500K (with the default settings, in which you select color temp – user defined). Curiously, this option – the warmest of all, because even in the color temp – warm picture is much colder and the temperature graph shows a curve near 7500K. Scenery mode is designed to give greater saturation amateur photo – it shows the gamma curve are “peak”, falling from the sky-high 2.7 in dark areas to very low values in the 1.4 – in light. In practice it means overstated contrast and dark areas of the photo understated – light. In gaming mode gamma curve is behaving even more surprising – it starts with a value of 2.5 in the dark areas (which increases the contrast and loss of detail in the image areas), with an increase in the brightness as much as she falls to 1.1, creating a faint image in bright areas pictures. Night View mode is not designed to work on the computer at night, as you might think, and to see the night shots – it “pulls” the detail in the dark areas of the image by reducing the contrast and brightness, as seen in the graph scale – the curve corresponds to only 2.2 middle of the chart, in the dark and light areas, it is much lower.

In the end, the results of measurements for the daily work we would recommend to use either mode sRGB, or Standard (greyed out to 40-60, to taste), and on the other switch only in specific conditions.

Color temperature and gamma graph modes Standard and sRGB:

The value of a static contrast of ASUS VS239N is high enough: 910:1. Minimum brightness – one of the lowest we’ve seen, a total of 37 cd / m ². Max, however, too small – 186 cd / m ². Uniformity of illumination at a brightness of 100% from the measurements of nine points was 89% – the result is quite good, but purely visually uneven illumination noticeable, especially in the lower right corner; also quite bright center, but at the edges, especially in the upper left corner of the light is weaker (the difference between minimum and maximum brightness is about 50 cd / m ²).

Matte screen surface, respectively, crystal effect is, but there is not too much in ASUS VS239N. As the viewing angle in the horizontal plane brightness decreases evenly and slightly in the vertical – with deviation of 45 degrees reducing the brightness of serious, with further variations in display brightness increases slightly. Also, the angle begins to show a purple hue, especially noticeable on a black background.
Results

Once again, we can say that in terms of image quality, the new budget model displays on the matrix e-IPS does not have any revelations – ASUS VS239N of its competitors in this respect differs mainly due to a set of predefined Splendid. The rest – the traditional strengths in the form of a good color and viewing angles to the expected slight deterioration in severe deviation from the vertical. The cost of this model is now in the range of $ 200-210, which is also a fairly typical price for the monitor in its class. Its pluses can also be attributed to the rigidity of the display mounting base – this cannot boast of all competitors.

Pros:
+ Good image quality
+ Flex Stand

Cons:
– Uneven illumination
– No HDMI-input
