If your priority is reading and not surfing or email then Fire HD 8.9 may be the better choice.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 has a resolution of at 1,920-by-1,280 pixels. Nook’s 9-inch screen has higher resolution.

The Kindle’s screen is 254 pixels per inch and Nook HD+ has 256ppi

More expensive Apple iPad has 263ppi and screen of Google Nexus 10 is 300 ppi.

Nook HD+ has 30-pin-to-USB cable and a special AC adapter. It is proprietary. You can charge it from a computer, but not from other devices’ adapters.

There are five main selections on the Nook’s menu: Web, Library, Apps, Email and Shop. The Nook uses a slightly modified version of the standard Android 4.0 browser. It is responsive and displays pages well.

Kindle and iPad support the 5GHz band to connect to the internet whereas Nook HD+ uses 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. So Wi-Fi reception is weaker as compared to Kindle and iPad. However, if you have Nook+ near your Wi-Fi router, you would not see the issue.

Some limitations of Kindle fire HD:

There is no slot a SD card so no expandable memory – To overcome this limitation, you can buy the 32GB version. Also remember that there is unlimited space on their cloud for Amazon content.

As against iPad, Kindle fire HD does not have GPS connectivity.

Its video interface could have been slightly better.

If price is the only thing that you are looking at, currently Nook HD+ price is 30$ less than Kindle Fire HD.
