Red Bull Stratos – Felix Baumgartner jump from the edge of space

In the 60 years of the last century, at the dawn of the Space Research, jumping from the stratosphere, such as the American project “Excelsior” and similar series of jumps performed in the Soviet Union, were vital for testing high-altitude suits, parachute systems, and of the procedure of the descent of man from space. Today, it is rather a challenge of own strength, the desire to step over the edge. One of the madmen who are ready to test themselves, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner has made the leap from the edge of space.

Red Bull Stratos - Felix Baumgartner

Felix Baumgartner was in a sealed capsule project Red Bull Stratos lifted to 37 km, to make a record jump and overcome in a free fall speed of sound.
Broadcast commentator himself Colonel Joseph Kittinger, the man who owns the current record high altitude jumps. August 16, 1960 under the “Excelsior” he jumped from a height of 31,300 meters and reached a freefall speed 988 km / h

Mission stage Red Bull Stratos:
3:00 – helium-filled balloon rise in volume 850 000 m3 at 37 km altitude

Depressurization of the capsule, Felix Baumgartner jumps from the edge of space.

The free fall lasts for 5 minutes and 30 seconds, after which the air resistance increases by reducing the rate of fall.

At an altitude of 1.5 km Felix Baumgartner opens the parachute and after 10 minutes of descent is on the ground.
The assurances of team Red Bull Stratos project has a serious scientific and load, and the data collected will help to develop new space suits for pilots and astronauts, to develop emergency evacuation procedures at high altitudes, to study the influence of humans to high velocities and accelerations.

In any case, it was a beautiful and exciting spectacle. Thanks Felix Baumgartner and team Red Bull Stratos for unforgettable hours. And we wish them new records.

Record freefall speed delivered! 1.342 km / h. Bravo! Felix Baumgartner and Red Bull Stratos team.
