Owning a drone is a lot of responsibility but also a lot of fun. A beginner or advanced drone pilot can take advantage of the numerous opportunities that present themselves in 2020. For example, there is a growing trend of drone photography/videography along with Drone package delivery. Drones are becoming more useful in 2020 and that is why now may be the best time for you to consider purchasing one.

I’m here today to review the top 10 best drones of 2020 and provide you with helpful drone related information. All of the drones I review can be purchased from Amazon regardless of your previous drone piloting experience. The reviews I will share with you focus on the best quality drones and not necessarily the most expensive drones on the market. The goal of this article is to provide you with valuable information to help you make a smart, informed, purchasing decision.

1. Best Camera Drone For The Money: DJI Mavic Pro Platinum

Price: $999.00

The DJI Mavic Pro Platinum is an upgrade from the original Mavic Pro. This new drone features a sleek, new, portable design with great picture quality/4K video, and makes considerably less noise than the original Mavic Pro. The camera quality is similar to the Mavic Pro but the quality on this drone is best. If noise and flying time are a big factor (wedding videographers for example), get the Platinum vs the original Mavic Pro. This is a drone which has been designed from the ground up to be compact and portable. You can fold it up and throw it in your backpack in a way that’s simply impossible with something like the DJI Phantom. The standard Mavic Pro sports a (very respectable) 27 minute flight time, DJI claims a full 30 minutes for the Platinum. It seems modest, but that’s an 11 percent improvement.

2. DJI Mavic 2 Zoom

Price: $1,349.00

This top end DJI Mavic 2 Zoom is very similar to that of the DJI Mavic Pro. This drone features a different camera and allows for lossless zoom when recording in 4k. The Zoom uses a 1/2.3-inch image sensor with 12MP resolution, the same size you find in many smartphones. The Mavic 2’s remote control comes with folding clips to hold your phone and a removable USB cable to connect it. The Mavic 2’s battery is more durable than the original is capable of flying for up to 31 minutes on a full charge. We highly recommend the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom if you are looking to capture stunning pictures and cinematic video clips.

3. DJI Mavic Pro

Price: $1,099.00

This top-end DJI Mavic Pro Drone is one of my favorites. Mavic drones are smaller all around, and foldable for easier storage and transport. The Mavic Pro features some of the best features that a drone can have: a 1-inch camera sensor for stunning 4K video capture at 100Mbps, multi-direction obstacle avoidance sensors for some of the safest drone flight possible, and much more. The Mavic Pro’s images and videos look way better than that of other similar drones. Most consumers are highly impressed with this 5 star, name-brand, drone with lasting quality, and durable battery life.

4. Best For Drone Enthusiast: Autel Robotics EVO Drone

Price: $1,049.00

The Autel Robotics Evo folding drone is very similar to the DJI Mavic Pro when it comes to flight features and product design. This drone also has a compact folding design, 4K stabilized camera and offers the quality & durability needed for your drone to last throughout the years. The Autel Robotics Evo offers an awesome flight experience that some enjoy more than the common DJI flight experience. This product comes with Live Deck which allows you to seamlessly Output your EVO’s Video Feed Via HDMI, Ethernet or USB without Being Connected to your Remote. So, you can display your drone footage easily on a tv or screen.

5. Best Drone For Photography: DJI Phantom 4

Price: $1,599.00

The DJI Phantom 4 is a great drone compared with some other drone brands, and for those who’ve flown a quad previously, you’ll experience no difficulty beginning with this one. The new Sport mode gives you a chance to get to your location quicker or simply have a fabulous time zipping around the sky. Its Obstacle Sensing System can help maintain a strategic distance from head-on crashes just as it can track subjects. The Phantom 4 Pro series was DJI’s best drone at launch for object avoidance technology.  The slow-motion video is a nice perk that comes with this amazing camera. The Phantom 4 Pro captures superb photos and video from the sky. DJ discontinued the Phantom 4 Pro because of the release of the Mavic 2 product line and they want to sell more of the newer product. Fortunately, the Phantom 4 Pro is still being sold on Amazon and it’s value will only increase as the supply of drones decreases. The Phantom drones were some of the best high-end consumer class quadcopters on the market. I would recommend looking to see if this drone is right for you!

6. DJI Phantom Pro 3

Price: $929.00

The Phantom series is one of the most iconic designs for drones. Their DJI Phantom 3 series arguably represents the best selling drone models of 2015 and 2016, and one of the best drones with a camera. Within the series, there are four different models: Standard, 4K, Advanced and Professional. Many manufacturers, whether following the idea or ahead of DJI, have utilized similar styling, and DJI has made very few changes through several iterations themselves. The DJI Phantom 3 is no longer in production because of the Mavic 2 product line. Interestingly, the DJI Phantom 3’s camera was ahead of its time but now seems to be old compared to the cameras of DJI’s modern drones. What it really boils down to, as fun as it is to just fly a drone, aerial photography is the name of the game with the Phantom line. The Phantom 3 is where DJI matured their products, becoming the leading drone manufacturer for a generation of pilots. The Phantom 3 was a shifting point for DJI and the brand. DJI has further innovated and created newer and superior quadcopters. I would recommend looking into this drone if you want a classic, quality proffesional DJI Drone.

The quadcopter also comes with five advanced flight modes:

  1. Follow Me
  2. Course Lock
  3. Waypoints
  4. Home Lock
  5. Point of Interest

Pre-Flight Rules & Regulations

If you are a citizen of the United States and you fly drones bigger than 0.55 lbs, you will need to follow a few guidelines before you start. Safety when operating a UAV is essential to knowing how to run a drone. Accidents occur, but with adequate care and judgement, they can be prevented. One of the greatest methods to avoid an incident is to buy a drone that offers some autonomous flight controls. You do not need a fully self-flying drone, but some collision prevention and hover capabilities will make a world of difference for you. Just some of the items we feel necessary for the best drone, which will be available on most models in our list above.

You’re most likely to need to register your drone with the FAA before you operate it, and be sure to check your state laws before you fly. Registration is required, but don’t worry, it’s quick, easy and just $5.

 Drone Legal and Safety

The drone you choose will be very fun to fly but you want to make sure you aren’t breaking any rules. Make sure to follow proper legal and safety requirements and use common sense when flying. You have to keep drones below 400 feet, but also stay away from busy streets, airports, or anything else that might damage your drone or vice versa. Similarly, many schools and campuses don’t allow you to fly a drone without permission, for safety reasons. You should always keep your drone away from people when flying it.

Also, before you know exactly what safety laws apply to your drone, you need to determine how you’ll be using it. If you’re flying professionally, there will be many strict requirements. Similarly, if you plan on making money with your drone, you’ll need to pass an FAA test and receive Part 107 certification. Once you obtain your certification, you can use your drone for any commercial purpose. Such as, you can take pictures for real estate agents, take pictures at weddings, shoot videos for advertisements and much more.
