What is tahini made of?

Tahini is made of sesame seeds that are ground into a smooth paste. The sesame seeds are sometimes hulled, sometimes they’re left unhulled. Tahini can be made from roasted or raw sesame seeds. Tahini has many uses: it can be part of dressings, part of soft serve, as a dip for snack bites, inside of stuffed dates, or used for so many other dishes.

Is tahini bad for you?

Depending on your diet, it can be good or bad. Tahini has a high fat content and a high number of calories, so moderation is advised for the best health benefits. It is not good for people who are allergic to sesame seeds because Tahini is made from Sesame seeds. It’s a big part of the mediterannean diet so if you love greek or mediterannean food, it may be hard to avoid Tahini.

What is tahini in the grocery store?

Tahini is a thick sauce made from Sesame seeds and it is usually found in the sauces or condiments aisle. It has a similar thickness to thin peanut butter and is often accompanied with hummus on food.  In most grocery stores, tahini is in the aisle with the condiments or oils, or in the aisle with ethnic foods.

Is there a substitute for tahini?

The best substitute for tahini may be cashew, almond, or peanut butter. These nut butters have a similar consistency to tahini and their flavor is fairly neutral. Another option is to use hummus or greek yogurt. These are usually toppings for a gyro or falafel and if you don’t have tahini I would recommend these. I love Tahini and I would say the texture of nut butter is similar to that of Tahini but I would never want to put that on a falafel or gyro. If your store doesn’t carry it, you can find it elsewhere.
